17 Reasons to Start Blogging (& How it Helps!)
I’m updating this post after blogging for two years. If you’re still deciding to start a blog in 2022 then I would recommend you do it. I’ve collected points that have helped me in my blogging journey. But these are all valid reasons that will help you too.
1. Build a Personal Brand
If you’ve always wanted to be known for your work then starting a blog is the best way to do it in 2022. Do you want to know why? Google’s CEO 2008 said that brands will dominate the search results and you can see the effects now. The Internet is full of personal brands now, whether it’s Neil Patel or Seth Godin, or Elon Musk.
Starting a blog is a great way to build a personal brand. You can prove yourself an expert in your field if you pick a blog niche and publish valuable content for a long time.
Yes, it won’t happen in one night, it will take time. But as you add more valuable content pieces to your blog your brand grows. Your blog will help you become a personal brand.
2. Monetize Your Blog
If you’re worried that your efforts will go wasted or that you’re putting so much time and energy into something that has no quick results then let me tell you this.
You. Are. Wrong. Here.
You can monetize your blog as you keep building it. So, it’s not like you won’t get anything in return, you get paid for your efforts.
The best part of blog monetization is that you can do it in many ways. You can sell products, promote affiliate products, do sponsored posts, display ads, etc. So, you’re not limited to just one or two methods.
I started this blog in 2020 and I already make a full-time income from it every month. I know many other bloggers who make more than a full-time income from their blogs.
So, whether you want to do it as a side hustle or run a full-time business – starting a blog is a way to go.
3. Attract an Audience
Blogging is a great way to attract an audience. If you start a blog and keep publishing helpful content then soon you will start attracting an audience who will be interested in hearing more from you.
You can do a lot of things if you have an engaged audience. Maybe you’re not yet ready to sell products. But if you’re planning to do it sometime in the future then by starting a blog now you will have an audience already. No need to start from scratch.
You can start building an email list or a Facebook community. Such that when you do launch your products your audience trusts you enough to buy from you.
4. Grow Your Business
Are you a business owner? Is your business stuck? Are you not getting enough sales? Or do you want to get more sales and customers? And you don’t have a blog?
Well if your business is online and you don’t have a blog yet then no wonder why your sales are stuck. Do you know 80% of businesses use blogs for marketing and get 4.5X more leads? So if you’re not maintaining a blog then you’re losing a lot of potential customers.
If you want to grow your business then start a blog today and publish helpful content regularly. Drive free traffic from Google and convert them into customers. A blog is free marketing.
5. Improve Writing Skills
Maybe you’re not a business owner but a normal person like me trying to improve her writing skills? Guess what? Publishing blog posts regularly does help in improving writing skills.
They say in sports “practice makes perfect.” Writing is like sports. The more you write the better you get at it. Your blog is a perfect place to practice and watch your writing skills improve.
How? By publishing new blog posts and by updating the old ones. As you keep adding new blog posts and go to check the older ones you can see that your writing has improved.
The best part is that you can always update old blog posts and improve your articles. You’ll be able to find and fix mistakes.
6. Become an Industry Expert
If you want to be known as an industry expert then the best way is to follow these four steps:
If you follow this strategy for a good amount of time (say 2 to 10 years) you’ll be known as an expert in your field. Want to see examples?
- Neil Patel – He is a known digital marketing expert. He has been in this industry for more than 10 years.
- Brian Dean – He has built an image as an SEO expert. He is the award-winning blogger of the Backlinko blog.
- Joanna Wiebe – She is a famous conversion copywriter with over 10 years of experience. Her blog CopyHackers help copywriters get better at the skill.
All of them started as bloggers. So, if you start today and keep publishing content on your blog, you’ll build an image for yourself too. In some years you will be a known industry expert.
7. Monetize Your Skills
Do you have a skill that can be monetized and offered as a service to make a living? Maybe you’re a graphic designer? Or do you design websites? Are you a certified resume writer? Or do you have anything else that people will pay you for?
Then starting a blog and showcasing your services is the best way to get clients. So how to get started?
- Start a blog.
- Create your services page.
- Publish blog posts talking about your services.
- Drive organic traffic.
- Convert visitors into clients.
That’s also how you get started for building a personal brand or becoming an industry expert as a service provider. Once you get a few clients and present high-quality work, they will recommend more clients to you. The chain will grow and in some time you will be known as the best service provider in that industry.
8. Start a Business
Are you planning to start a business? Do you want to sell products? If so then, a blog is a wonderful method of free marketing.
Just like how it worked in the above situations, if you write blog posts about your products and get them ranked on search engines you will drive free organic traffic. This traffic will convert into customers.
I’m not saying that blogging is the only way to get clients but it is one of the best ways. Because it’s free and gets you long-term results. So, definitely try other methods to get customers but do not sleep on blogging. It will only help you in growing your business.
9. Get Opportunities
My blog has got me opportunities that I could never get otherwise. For example, I was recently invited to contribute to a big authority website.
And they even asked me to contribute regularly. That is all because they read my blog and found it engaging. Getting published on big sites was always my dream.
Other than that, I get regular invites to contribute on sites, sponsored post opportunities, freelance gigs, etc.
So, if you want opportunities to come to you then starting a blog is a wonderful method. Just start sharing your knowledge and wait for the magic to happen.
10. Learn Digital Marketing Skills
Do you want to become a digital marketer and get experience by working on a live project? Then you should start a blog because your blog will become your live project and you can learn and try whatever digital marketing skills you want to.
Blogging is so much more than writing and publishing. It’s also about:
- Email marketing
- Affiliate marketing
- Content marketing
- Paid advertising, etc.
So whether you want to become a versatile digital marketer or an expert in one domain you can do so in your blog. Your blog is the platform you need.
11. Join the Blogging Community
Still, the best part of blogging is its amazing blogging community. I am saying this after connecting with so many amazing bloggers who have become my friends.
The blogging community is so supportive and inspiring. When I started, these were the people who helped me learn and improve my blog.
So if you’re doubtful that you will be alone in your blogging journey and that’s the reason why you’re not starting a blog then don’t be. There’s a big blogging community waiting for you. You’re going to meet awesome bloggers and learn so much from them.
To get started, you can join my Facebook group and start asking your questions.
12. Teach what You’re Passionate About
Do you have an interest that you’d like to pursue further? Or do you want to teach it to other people? Then the best way to teach a group of interested people is to start a blog and publish blog posts.
For example, my first blog was a book blog. I started it because I was mad about fantasy books and I wanted to share the stories with more people. Although it’s not live anymore, I was able to grow it and build an audience.
So, even if you have a hidden skill and you want to teach others then your blog is the link between you and your students.
13. Create Value
Maybe you’re worried that publishing blog posts is a time waste and you’re not doing anything productive then don’t be. I’ve seen many bloggers who started their blogs as a hobby but turned it into informative resources.
Just imagine this. With every blog post you publish, you own a part of the internet. How cool is that? Your articles will help someone learn what you teach. Because there’s always someone who wants to learn what you teach.
So start a blog and start adding value.
14. Build a Portfolio
Do you offer services? Or are you collecting your best work to build a portfolio? Then you can create a website and use it as your portfolio.
Here are the reasons why a blog is can work as a portfolio:
- Can be easily shared
- Updated easily
- The employer always has the link
- It attracts employers from Google
So, if you want to get multiple job opportunities then starting a blog and building your work portfolio is the best way. You can create a portfolio site or use the website for other purposes and just dedicate one page to your portfolio. Just like I did for my writing portfolio.
15. Land Your Dream Job
Okay, this is my second most favorite reason for starting a blog. I got my favorite job with the most amazing salary through my blog. And remember I’ve been blogging for 2 years only.
So, if you want to land your dream job and get paid for doing the work you love then your blog is the best way to showcase your skills. Your about page presents your profile, your contact page works as a way to contact you, and your blog posts show your expertise.
You can apply for as many jobs as you want and just share a link to your blog. Most of the recruiters will like to move forward.
16. Get Freelance Opportunities
And this is my first favorite reason for starting a blog. Getting freelance writing opportunities without searching for them.
I started positioning myself as an SEO copywriter a while ago and it took me some months to start getting writing projects through my website. But now, I get them regularly. I select those that match my terms.
A blog is a perfect tool for me to showcase my writing skills. So, if you want to become a writer (or offer any other freelance services) then starting a blog is a wonderful idea.
17. Stay Updated with the Trends
And last but not least, managing this blog has helped me stay updated with the industry trends. I used to be the last person to show interest in technology, or this is what I believed. But now when I have a blog I try different tools and I love it.
I find myself excited about the latest releases in the industry. I eagerly wait for new deals on AppSumo or Black Friday deals.
So if you want to show your love for technology then you can start a blog. In fact, you can start a technology blog where you can publish the latest technology releases or news.
