Why Starting a Blog is a Good Idea?
I’m sure you still have doubts like “is it worth starting a blog?” or “is it too late to become a blogger” that’s why I have collected these top five benefits of starting a blog.
Personal Brand Building
The biggest benefit of owning a blog is to build a personal brand. According to an article by Wired, Google’s CEO in 2008 said that brands will dominate Google. And we can see the effects now, popular personal brands like Neil Patel rule the search rankings.
Building a personal brand is helpful in many ways. Not only does it make you stand out from the competition but also gets you unique opportunities.
My favorite example is Deepak Kanakaraju from Digital Deepak. He started a motorcycle blog and was invited to speak at an event in China. Fast Forward to today, he is known as one of the best digital marketing experts in India.
So how to build a brand using a blog?
It’s simple. Keep sharing your opinion as blog posts, work on getting blog traffic and build a loyal audience base. Of course, building a positive image takes time. So, you will have to keep publishing and building an audience.
Land Business Opportunities
The best benefit of having an established blog online is getting work opportunities. This is the best way I land jobs. As a copywriter, I showcase my writing services on a page. My blog posts work as portfolio pieces (I have a portfolio too). People who are interested in using my services contact me.
In other words, a blog is like free marketing. Once you build it enough, people will find it. They will check out your services page. And they will want to work with you.
So how do you land business opportunities with a blog?
Start a blog and publish blog posts talking about your services and how you do your job. Create a services page listing your offers and keep driving people to read your blog. In short, show them that you know this stuff.
Become an Expert
Whether you offer services or not, by having a blog you will always build a personal brand and become an expert. That is if you use your blog effectively.
Remember Digital Deepak? Not only is he a strong brand online with a following of over 1 million but also he is one of the best digital marketing experts in India. And he says it all started with a blog.
Now, what does he get for becoming an expert digital marketer? He gets to use his expertise to help big companies with their digital marketing strategy. He teaches his students how to become digital marketers. Also, he gets invited to speak at digital marketing events.
So how do you become an expert by creating a blog?
By picking a niche and focusing on it only. Digital Deepak’s blog is all about digital marketing and he never published anything other than that. Similarly, if you’re passionate about something then you can start blogging about it. And with time, you will become a known expert in your industry.
Improve Writing Skills
This should go without saying. Having a blog will always improve your writing skills. Do you know how much in-demand writing is? Very.
And that one of the most effective marketing strategies is content marketing? But how? Isn’t it time taking? Yes, it takes time but once it starts getting desired results it keeps on getting them for a long time.
Smart businesses know the power of storytelling and content creation in brand positioning. And that’s why they invest in content marketing. However, these people are busy and content creation is time-consuming. So they’re looking to hire content creators to hand over the responsibility.
By starting a blog now, you will improve your writing skills. Then you can also offer your writing services. Just like I did.
Learn New Skills
But writing is not the only skill you will learn. There’s a lot that goes behind the scenes. And so you get many learning opportunities. But these are not just-for-fun opportunities. These are real in-demand skills that can help you make a living easily.
What skills am I talking about? Email marketing, SEO, social media marketing, paid ads, etc. You can offer these as your services and get paid to help businesses.
You will run experiments on your blog and gain experience. Use this experience to showcase that you know what you’re talking about. Do the same for these businesses too.
So you see how having a blog is going to help you move forward in your career. The best part is you can do all of them together. You can keep writing on your blog to build an expert personal brand, learn new skills, and offer services.
Why You Should Not Start a Blog?
There’s just so much you can achieve with a blog. But not everyone thinks the same way. For some people, managing a blog can be boring. And so they shouldn’t start a blog because it takes time to grow a blog and they won’t last long.
Here are the three reasons why a blog is not a good option for you.
If You Don’t Like Writing
Yes, blogging is not all about writing. But writing is a major part of running a blog. You will have to consistently publish new blog posts, learn how to write content that ranks on Google (to get organic traffic), and keep updating old blog posts.
Plus, you will have to write social media posts, guest posts, email newsletters, pitches, etc. So, writing is almost in every part of blogging and if you don’t like writing then you’ll most probably lose interest and drop your blog.
However, if you’re focused on building a brand then you can hire freelance writers to write content for your blog. Then writing won’t be a problem.
If You Don’t Have Patience
Are you imagining that your blog will get you results within days? Then you’re highly mistaken and you shouldn’t start a blog, at least with such expectations.
Because blogging is a long pursuit. It will take years to get the results you want. For example, it took 13 years for Digital Deepak to reach where he is now. And Neil Patel has been working in this industry for over 10 years now.
You and I are no different. If you start today, it will take some time to reach where you want. And that’s okay. Because the growth in blogging is compounded. You will have to put in lots of work but once you start getting some traction it will grow exponentially.
Blogging is a game of patience. So, play it only if you know how to be patient.
If You Want To Earn Quick Money
Blogging is not a get-rich-quick scheme. And if you’re planning to start a blog only to earn money then it’s either two things.
- You were not aware of the benefits that I told you about above.
- You have no idea how earning money from blogging works.
Because money is a by-product of all the benefits. And you will be able to make money once you become trustworthy and build a loyal audience.
Yes, you should earn as you grow your blog but it should never be your main goal. Focus on building your brand and money can follow.
You would have noticed, all of these reasons are just excuses that may try to stop you from starting a blog. You can easily overcome them because you know the results are impressive. It’s never too late to start a blog.
