how does blog commenting help you grow your blog

Commenting on blogs used to be the easiest way to build backlinks and get better search rankings. People would then rank and drive organic traffic. But, not so much now. Still, you can use blog commenting for great benefits. But how to do blog commenting for traffic growth using SEO?

Is it still a great traffic source? Can you get millions of blog traffic by commenting on blogs? Does it help in improving SEO? If so then how to write blog comments that get approved? If you have any of these questions then your answers are here.

Long story short, yes blog commenting helps new bloggers in great ways. And so, you must learn how to write good blog comments.

How to do blog commenting for traffic growth using SEO?

To get traffic to your link using blog comments, you should write comments that get approved. You can write good comments by following these 6 steps:

  • Use a professional photograph
  • Write your full name
  • Read the full blog post
  • Write a meaningful comment (add value)
  • Add your signature
  • Add links only if needed

I’ve shared each step in more detail, so you will have everything you need to write high-quality comments.

how to do blog commenting for traffic

Let’s get started.

But, you might be wondering why write blog comments? Is it a helpful technique? Let’s find out.

Benefits of Blog Commenting

Yes, blog commenting is good for traffic and SEO. But, it’s even more helpful in ways you won’t have imagined.

Blog Traffic Growth

Good comments make readers curious. They click on the profile to learn more about the writer or read more of his content. That’s why bloggers hire writers to add witty comments on blogs. But, this is not a way to drive lots of traction.

Because rarely do people read the whole blog post and then read comments. They’re busy so as soon as they find what they were looking for, they leave.

Leaving comments in popular blogs can get you a few hundred clicks but the competition is high. To get attention, your comment should stand out.

So, commenting on blogs may get you a few clicks but not so much. You should comment but it shouldn’t be your only blog traffic strategy. Because blog traffic is not the most beautiful benefit of commenting on blogs.

Improved SEO

When I started blogging, adding comments on blogs was the only strategy I knew to gain backlinks. Because I noticed a 30 DA backlink on my site audit report. So, I would add comments almost every day.

I read about blog commenting and found out that these backlinks are no-follow by default. Meaning, these do not add value to your SEO efforts. To get better rankings you need to build do-follow backlinks.

Yet, no-follow backlinks still help in building authority on the internet. It’s like the more the name (or your site name) is on the internet the more is your authority.

Also, no-follow backlinks improve DA (domain authority). DA affects SEO. Higher DA sites rank on Google fast.

Blog Network Growth

You build relationships with other bloggers and grow your network.

Blogging is about building your network, adding more readers, and making new friends. But if you don’t build your network you will not last for long.

The best examples are Facebook groups and Twitter bloggers. I started building my network when I joined Twitter and I’ve got some great blogger friends from there. Then I started a Facebook group where I added more bloggers who learn, help and grow with each other.

Approving helpful comments on posts helps bloggers add more value to posts. You did a favor so they will remember you. This is a great way to start a friendship.

It’s also a great way to get a yes.

You have better chances of getting a yes by asking a favor to a friend rather than a stranger. Think about it, how many times do you trash an email from an unknown person? Many, right?

Or how many replies have you gotten so far on your cold emails? Rarely, right? It’s because people are abusing this method so even genuine requests get mixed with spam and end up in the trash.

But what do you do when you get an email from a friend? You open it, read and reply to it.

More Opportunities

Witty comments on popular sites unlock great opportunities for you. Such as guest blogging, freelancing, and other business opportunities.

For example, at the time of updating this post, I got an invite to write a guest post for a popular (DA 54) news website. I got a juicy backlink and a published link of my writing sample to add to my writing portfolio.

Sure, a comment on a blog won’t get you tons of traffic but it will get you opportunities as long as it stays there.

The trick is to write a valuable comment that gets approved.

How to Write Good Blog Comments that get Approved?

Writing blog comments that get approved is important to get all these benefits. If the blog owner does not approve your comment then it won’t display below his blog post.

Let’s first see what is not a good blog comment.

Bloggers hate comments like “nice post” or “good read” and other two-liners. Such comments don’t get approved. Because they don’t add value to the post. Bloggers understand that you’re another person trying to build backlinks. So, they will delete it.

But they not only approve but also reply to comments that add value to their post. So, what are good blog comments? Here’s how to write good blog comments.

Read the Full Blog Post

Do you wonder why comments like “nice post” or “good post” don’t get approved? It’s because the blog owner knows that the commenter has not read the post. This isn’t genuine at all but a sleeky backlink-building technique.

To be genuine, add something to your comment that catches the blogger’s attention. Tell him that you’ve read the post before commenting.

So, how would you make the blogger believe that you have read the post?

By reading the blog post. Yes, it might take time but you will also learn. It’s because you’re commenting on the blog that is an industry expert and delivers valuable content.

Use a Professional Photograph

Use a professional photograph that gets displayed whenever you comment. This way people will know who commented. It’s one way to add credibility to your comment. Setting a permanent profile photo on Gravatar will help you display it everywhere.

Gravatar is a free tool that allows you to set and display a photo. Such that your photo shows up whenever you comment.

Isn’t it cool? You don’t have to add a photo every time you add a comment.

Here’s how to set up a profile photo on Gravatar.

1: Go to gravatar.com and click on the “Sign in” button. And create your account.

2: Click on “Add a new email” to attach an email address to your photograph.

3: Click on “Add a new image” to add a photo to the email.

4: Click on the email and choose the image you uploaded to attach it with the email.

Once you do it, your image will be shown next to your comment.

Write your Full Name

Another obvious tip is to use your full name while adding a comment on a website.

It’s obvious because it’s common sense to display the name of the person who commented. But many people try to stuff keywords or their company’s name to try to gain benefits. But, they don’t get what they want because such comments are so often and they don’t get approved.

So, if you want to get your comment approved then do not pretend that you want to. The best is to keep it original.

Plus, displaying a name with your profile photo will add a name to the person who wrote the witty comment. You will end up getting more authority.

So, make sure that you use your full name while blog commenting.

Write a Meaningful Comment (add value)

A valuable comment is what the blogger seeks in the sea of “nice post” comments. They are rare. That’s why such comments not only get approved but also get extra love as replies or other benefits.

It will be easy to write a valuable comment if you’ve read the blog post. You can add points that you liked in the post and further add your opinion to them. Or you can highlight points that you don’t support and then explain why you do not.

To make your comment stand, it’s important to make a point. You can also ask questions or highlight a point that the author missed. He will be more than happy to approve your comment as it adds more value to the article.

If you’re adding a new point then explain it. It will become lengthy but that means you have taken time to explain what you’re trying to teach.

And of course, always conclude if you’re making a point by telling how important it is not to ignore your point.

Add your signature

Once you have written a valuable comment then you can add your signature. It can be as simple as your name and as grand as your name, company name, and tagline.

But, I don’t recommend adding your company tagline as it would appear over promotional. So, the best way is to thank the author for writing the post then add your full name again with your company name.

Add links only if needed

Always try to avoid adding direct links to your comment. Links make it appear a link-building strategy no matter how amazing your comment is.

But, sometimes you know you can’t explain everything about a topic in the comments section. So, you might explain a thing or two about it and then add your link. You can ask the readers to check out the post. It’s up to the blogger to approve your comment or not.

You also get an option to add your website link when filling in the other details link name, email, and website. So add your link there instead of the main comment.

Use that space to add value to the post only.

Mistakes to Avoid While Commenting on Blogs

While blog commenting is a great way to build your community many things can go wrong. To keep yourself safe, here are some mistakes to avoid so your efforts are not wasted.

Bulk Commenting

Blog commenting was great a few years ago but it soon got abused by black hat SEO lovers. They built backlinks through bulk commenting. To stop this, Google started penalizing those sites that comment in bulk.

So, do not comment in bulk. Instead, comment on a few blog posts that you read and want to add your thoughts. Make it always appear natural.

Building Backlinks

If you comment on blogs with the sole purpose of building backlinks, you won’t get far. Because Google algorithms are getting super smart in catching abusers. Besides, backlinks gained by commenting on blogs are not very helpful.

So, focus on building relationships and an expert personal image. It will help you more in the future.

Adding Irrelevant Comments

No matter how valuable your comment is, if it’s not related to the content in the blog post it will never get approved. That’s why reading the blog post is important.

When you comment after reading the blog post you tend to add relevant and valuable comments. Such types of comments get approved.

Not Responding to Replies

Many times bloggers after adding comments on blogs do not respond to replies. This is a big mistake.

Think about why you commented in the first place? Isn’t it because you wanted to build a relationship with the blogger? Now that he has responded to you, you must reply to him. Use this opportunity to take your conversations to the next level.

Common FAQs on Blog Commenting

Here are some common FAQs that will help you even more.

Yes, blog commenting for SEO still works but, it is not as effective as it used to be a few years ago. You can build no-follow backlinks, which are still useful but not equal to do-follow links.

Does commenting on blogs work?

Blog commenting is not the best strategy for driving traffic. But it helps in building relationships with other bloggers and getting business opportunities. And it works great.

Conclusion

So there you have it, you know exactly how to do blog commenting for traffic growth using SEO.

But now, you know what it’s good for. So go ahead and start building amazing friendships with your favorite bloggers. Add valuable comments and get business opportunities.

But you know what, commenting helps the other blogger grow her blog. So, I am going to ask you to add a valuable comment below and let me know which blogs you are going to comment on. I’m sure you have a few in mind. Go ahead and tell me.

I think the only detail I would add is to only leave your website link if it is a relevant to your niche. If you write about blogging but comment on a dog blog, it doesn’t seem to be relevant. Let me know if I’m thinking about this incorrectly though.

    Also…great post! I loved it.

Yes Caitlin! Thanks for detailing it. Even a dofollow link from a quality site is useless if it’s not niche specific.

Great article. Commenting on other blogs is an often overlooked SEO tactic. It really helps to expose your brand, and yes, while the links are nofollow, they are links, and they can send traffic to your site, ultimately becoming a signal to Google and other search engines. I really like the section about building relationships. That’s really the biggest key to growing your blog. It’s so hard to do it alone, but if you build genuine relationships with other bloggers, you can really grow your traffic, your readership and even your revenue. Thanks for this one!

Great advice. Commenting on other blogs can be very valuable for sure. You make a solid point about not over-commenting. Like you said, no one spends their entire day reading blogs, so 30 comments in a day is a red flag. You need to genuinely read the article, appreciate the content and then make an educated comment that adds value.
